According to רש"י the text of the משנה is אחת בנטילה ואחת בשטיפה, and שטיפה means immersion; according to תוספות the משנה reads ידו אחת משטיפה אחת, and שטיפה means pouring.
Initially the vessel must contain a רביעית of water and each hand be washed twice. If part of the water was already used for נטילה, the remaining water is called שירי טהרה. When pouring on one hand (only), one may pour once (even less than a רביעית) provided that it is the amount of two שטיפות and the water is משירי טהרה. If one pours on both hands together from שירי טהרה; if he pours twice a רביעית is not necessary, however if he pours once מרובה כשנים, a רביעית is necessary.
